What is resilient skin? How to build stronger, healthier skin
What is resilient skin and why does it matter? Discover how a healthy skin barrier helps your skin retain moisture, resist irritation and recover from everyday stress.
I have been hearing the term resilient skin a lot recently - but what does it mean? Resilient skin is skin that can better withstand everyday environmental and physical stress, retain moisture, resist irritation and recover more effectively when it is challenged. At the heart of healthy, resilient skin is a strong skin barrier, which helps keep hydration in and irritants out. And as our skin changes with age, hormones, weather and environmental exposure, building skin resilience can become an increasingly important part of a good skincare routine.
We have talked a lot about the skin barrier in recent months and a strong skin barrier is crucial to maintaining resilient skin, but why do we want resilient skin?
We want resilient skin because it stays healthy, comfortable, and better equipped to handle everyday physical and environmental stress
Resilient skin has:
Better moisture retention: A strong skin barrier helps to lock in hydration and prevent water from evaporating, keeping skin plump and soft.
Fewer reactions: resilient skin tolerates weather shifts, pollution, and products more easily without turning red, dry, or irritated.
Faster recovery: When minor damage or stress happens, resilient skin heals and returns to its normal baseline more quickly.
Slow those signs of ageing: Here’s the one you really want to hear! Resilient skin is better equipped to withstand daily oxidative stress and help maintain its elasticity and structure for longer, helping to reduce the visible signs of premature ageing, including lines, wrinkles and sagging.
This means the earlier you start putting in place a robust skincare routine to build and maintain your skin’s resilience, the better.
So how do we build resilient skin?
The mistake is believing that stronger results require stronger treatment. More acids, more exfoliation and more active ingredients can easily become a cycle of irritation. When the barrier is compromised, adding more intensity does not create better skin. It creates more work for already stressed skin.
Start with the skin barrier
The foundation to building resilient skin relies on nourishing lipids like ceramides, fatty acids, and glycerin to protect the outer layer of skin and prevent water loss.
Your cleanser is where resilience starts
We start where every facialist you have ever met starts - with the daily cleanse.
Harsh, stripping cleansers or abrasive physical scrubs must be replaced with pH-balanced, sulfate-free washes that preserve natural oils. Delivering so many treatments in my clinic, I meet women every day, so have seen skin that is super-stressed, on the way to being stressed and, of course, super-resilient already. As a result, I have developed a collection of cleansing products that support your skin for the state it’s in now, and as your resilience builds, you can choose, if you wish, to take your daily routine a step further.
If you are experiencing any skin sensitivity, I’d recommend you start your day with my Prep Cleanse. This soothing, creamy formula contains panthenol (pro- vitamin B5) which hydrates and helps reduce redness, blackcurrant extract for its antioxidants and omega fatty acids to defend against oxidative stress, while jojoba oil and shea butter nourish and balance without clogging pores. Use morning and night to ease away any inflammation while thoroughly cleaning skin of impurities, makeup and external pollution.
When should you exfoliate?
If your skin is not experiencing any sensitivity, I'd amend the routine to start the day with my fabulous Prep Wash and end the day with Prep Cleanse. Prep Wash is a mild but very effective exfoliator - not the sort with scratchy crystals or seed husks (goodness no, NEVER use one of these!) but the sort built using a carefully balanced blend of glycolic and salicylic acids to gently clears impurities and leaves skin feeling amazing - and with a healthy skin barrier.
Exfoliating is important. For a start, it clears dead skin cells that are clinging to the epidermis, which can block pores and trigger breakouts. It also promotes healthy skin-cell turnover - as we age, our skin's natural shedding process slows down. Exfoliants (like salicylic and glycolic acids) encourage fresh cell renewal and help keep skin glowing. Finally, without a layer of dead cells blocking the surface, your hydrating serums and moisturisers will be more effective, as they actually reach the skin cells they are designed to support.
Choose your serums carefully
After your cleanse, choose your serum carefully. It’s wise to steer clear of any strong or unnecessary actives until you have established a healthy skin barrier and resilient skin. For skin still in its sensitive stage (and be aware, some skin will always be sensitive, with the hormone disruptions we experience as we reach mid-life) I recommend applying Power HA only - my really beautiful hyaluronic acid serum that smooths, soothes and gives your skin what it needs to maintain healthy hydration.
Support stressed skin with recovery ingredients
Next, apply my brand new Power X, which harnesses the power of exosomes and vegan polynucleotides to first trigger the skin into recover mode and then provide the building blocks to help this happen.
Protect resilient skin from oxidative stress
For more resilient skin there are more options. If sun damage is your primary concern, go with Power AOX, my daily Vitamin C boost for your face that helps protect against the oxidative stress of UV, pollution, blue light and poor sleep, restore brightness and smooth uneven skin tones. Alternate with Power X to build smooth, resilient skin that is ready to cope with makeup, daily pollutants and hormonal fluctuations.
And never skip your SPF
Finally, as always - daily UV Protection. Broad-spectrum SPF is non-negotiable, acting as the primary defense against environmental stressors that degrade skin strength over time. Use Cream Solar 20 from October to March, then switch to Solar 50. Yes, you need SPF even in the winter months and even this far north! Cream Solar 20 is a daily moisturiser with SPF 20 built in, making it super easy (really no excuse not to!) ensure your skin is protected even before you leave your bathroom.
In summary: what is resilient skin?
Resilient skin is skin that can withstand everyday stress, retain moisture, resist irritation and recover effectively from environmental and physical challenges. A healthy skin barrier is central to skin resilience because it helps prevent moisture loss while protecting the skin from external irritants.
Building resilient skin is not about using more powerful products or constantly exfoliating. A barrier-first skincare routine should focus on gentle cleansing, good hydration, nourishing ingredients and daily broad-spectrum UV protection. As your skin becomes more comfortable and balanced, carefully chosen exfoliating and active ingredients can be introduced according to your skin's needs.
The aim is not perfect or problem-free skin. It is healthy skin that is better able to cope with real life: changing weather, pollution, UV exposure, hormonal changes and the natural effects of ageing.
Love, Penny x
