Summer skin hydration: how to keep your skin barrier strong when heat, UV and air conditioning take their toll

Summer skin hydration: how to keep your skin barrier strong when heat, UV and air conditioning take their toll

Summer might make us feel brighter and more energised, but our skin can struggle with the combination of heat, UV exposure, dry indoor air and constant changes in temperature. If your skin feels tight, uncomfortable, dull or suddenly more sensitive during warmer months, it may not need more products, it may need better hydration and stronger barrier support.

I love the sunshine, but moving between hot, dry rooms, bright UV-filled days outdoors and the cool air conditioning of my clinic puts my skin under significant stress. The key to healthy summer skin is understanding that hydration is not simply about adding water. It is about helping your skin hold onto moisture, supporting its natural barrier and giving skin cells what they need to function efficiently.

Discover how to keep skin hydrated in summer with barrier-supporting skincare ingredients, hydration tips and ways to protect skin from heat, UV and air conditioning.

Cleanse with intention

Avoid over cleansing, particularly with foaming cleansers that leave skin feeling tight. In hot weather, when we have ‘glowed’ all day, we naturally wash our face more frequently, which can remove essential lipids that help hold moisture within the skin.

Choose a gentle cleanser that removes sweat, sunscreen and pollution without disrupting the skin barrier.

I recommend my ladies start their day with SkinGoal Prep Cleanse - a soothing, creamy antioxidant-rich formula designed  to remove makeup, impurities and daily pollutants while protecting and calming the skin barrier.  Follow it up with my gorgeous Botanical Balance Tonic. Infused with ginseng, hyaluronic acid and a blend of botanical actives it will gently refresh and rebalance all skin types, even the most sensitive. If you feel the need for a quick cleanse post-work, just use this, it’s a cheeky hack that will refresh and rehydrate without compromising skin barrier function.

Feed the cells

Hydration depends on supporting the skin’s natural moisturising systems and cellular function. Ingredients that support the skin's natural moisturising factors and systems are more valuable than simply coating the surface.

Look for ingredients such as:

  • Glycerin to attract water into the skin.

  • Sodium Hyaluronate to bind moisture efficiently.

  • Ceramides to reinforce the barrier.

  • Niacinamide to improve barrier function and reduce water loss.

  • Power DNA technology, using NMN and NAD⁺ support, to help maintain healthy cellular energy so skin functions efficiently under environmental stress.

My Power HA serum offers a whack of hyaluronic acid along with glycerin and other hydration-focussed ingredients to support dry and dehydrated skin. Use it after your cleanse morning and night.

Similar to hyaluronic acid, ceramides draw in and retain water to keep skin hydrated. However, they also go a step further by actively working to repair the skin, reduce inflammation, and smooth fine lines and wrinkles. I have included ceramides in my Cream Repair night cream, which is perfect for skin struggling with dryness.

Niacinamide is a B Vitamin and and a primary active in my Cream Revive night cream, which also contains bakuchiol, a natural alternative to retinol, to create a formulation that calms, brightens, and restores lipids for sensitive, menopausal, or easily inflamed skin - making it perfect for summer skin, particularly if you’re out and about in the sun all day.

B Vitamins are excellent for boosting your skincare routine, in many of its forms, and is a key ingredient in my star serum, Power DNA. You can learn all about it here. Use it at night to not only boost hydration, but feed your skin cells with what they need for enhanced cell function and repair, improved collagen production and skin barrier resilience.

Protect every day

I know, I don’t need to say it again, but I will anyway… UV exposure and dry, air conditioned environments both increase water loss.

Daily broad spectrum SPF remains essential, even when working indoors near windows or commuting.

Daily habits that genuinely help

  • Drink enough water for overall health, but remember hydration of the skin depends far more on barrier integrity than water intake alone

  • Avoid very hot showers, which dissolve protective surface lipids

  • Apply your Power HA serum while skin is still slightly damp after cleansing to help trap water within the upper layers.

  • Consider using a humidifier overnight if indoor air is consistently dry

  • Reapply moisturiser if spending many hours in heavily air conditioned offices or on long haul flights

Summer skin is often mistaken for healthy skin because it may look temporarily brighter or more glowing, which is due to increased oil production. In reality, prolonged heat and air conditioning can quietly weaken the barrier, accelerate water loss and leave skin less resilient over time.

Hydration is achieved best by supporting the biology of the skin. Cleanse with intention. Feed the cells. Protect every day. When those three pillars work together, skin is far better equipped to stay comfortable, resilient and hydrated, whatever the weather.

IN SUMMARY

How does hot weather affect your skin?

Hot weather can increase water loss from the skin, especially when combined with sweating, UV exposure and dry air conditioning. This can leave skin feeling dehydrated, sensitive or tight.

What are the best skincare ingredients for dehydrated summer skin?

Ingredients that help attract and retain moisture include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate and ceramides. Niacinamide can also support the skin barrier and help reduce moisture loss.

Is drinking more water enough to hydrate your skin?

Drinking enough water is important for overall health, but skin hydration depends largely on the strength of your skin barrier and its ability to retain moisture.

Why does my skin feel dry after being in air conditioning?

Air conditioning reduces humidity levels, which can increase transepidermal water loss. This can leave skin feeling dry, tight and less comfortable.

Should I change my skincare routine in summer?

Many people benefit from adjusting their routine in summer by using gentler cleansing, hydration-focused serums, barrier-supporting moisturisers and consistent SPF protection.
