A young woman applies daily SPF

Why daily SPF is a non-negotiable for skin longevity

SPF has moved beyond summer skincare and into daily biological necessity. I know I bang on about the importance of SPF as part of your daily routine, but it’s really simple: consistent ultraviolet exposure is a direct driver of collagen loss, pigmentation and cellular fatigue.

Ultraviolet radiation is one of the primary drivers of collagen breakdown, pigmentation, and chronic inflammation within the skin. These are not superficial concerns. They sit at the level of cellular function.

When UV exposure occurs, it triggers the formation of reactive oxygen species - often known as free radicals. These unstable molecules damage cellular structures, including DNA and proteins such as collagen and elastin. Over time, this leads to thinning skin, loss of elasticity, and uneven tone. In midlife, where repair mechanisms are already slowing, this damage accumulates more visibly and more quickly.

For some time I have felt like I was banging a drum nobody was really listening to - or not with any ongoing commitment, anyway. It’s been my argument, for years, that SPF should not be seasonally driven, but a daily discipline, and at last this seems to be happening! Hashtags such as #spfeveryday, #sunscreeneveryday, #wearsunscreen, #protectyourskin, #sundamage and #skincancerawareness are popping up across all social media platforms, and I am totally here for it.

SPF you can wear every day

When I developed my SPF products - both my Solar 50 and my Cream Solar 20 – how it felt on the skin was hugely important to me. I know plastering delicate facial skin with a heavy cream every morning is very low down on our list of things we want to do! I also wanted creams that were a blend of skincare and sun protection - not simply sun protection. It seems the rest of the skincare industry is catching up.

My SPF creams are designed not to simply offer protection from sunburn, they form a core part of skin longevity through topical skincare.

Solar 50 is a lightweight cream that offers both the highest levels of UVA and UVB protection, broadspectrum (very important!) AND contains skin-first ingredients that go beyond just sun protection. Thermus Thermophillus Ferment is a marine-derived antioxidant that helps protect against infrared and environmental stress;  panthenol (a vitamin B5 derivative) hydrates, calms and helps strengthen the skin barrier; glycolic acid is gentle resurfacing acid that supports skin clarity and smooth texture; and aloe vera and glycerin are hydrating actives that keep skin soft, balanced and comfortable throughout the day. Use this face cream every time you leave the house - and reapply regularly.

Cream Solar 20 leads as a daily moisturiser with SPF 20 built in. As a moisturiser, it contains: a peptide complex  to helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and support long-term skin firmness; sodium hyaluronate to deliver hydration and plumping benefits without weight; sodium ascorbyl phosphate – a stabilised form of vitamin C that brightens and protects against free radicals; and aloe vera and jojoba seed oil, which soothe and nourish the skin while helping maintain skin barrier health.

This is why SPF must become non negotiable.

Once a day is not enough…

However, there is still a misunderstanding that needs correcting. Many women believe that applying SPF in the morning is enough, or that it is only necessary in direct sunlight. Both are wrong. Ultraviolet radiation penetrates through cloud cover and glass. It is present even on overcast UK days. More importantly, SPF efficacy reduces over time through natural skin movement, oil production, and environmental exposure.

Daily SPF is, therefore, not a single step. It is a commitment to consistent protection. It sits alongside cleansing, feeding the cells, and cueing renewal as part of a complete system. Without it, every other step is partially undermined. You cannot invest in collagen stimulation or pigmentation correction while allowing daily UV damage to continue unchecked.

When the skin is properly cleansed, when it is nourished with the right actives, when renewal is intelligently cued, SPF becomes the shield that maintains those gains. It prevents regression. It protects cellular energy. It supports barrier integrity.

For women aged 35 plus this is particularly important. Hormonal shifts, reduced lipid production, and slower cellular turnover all contribute to increased vulnerability. The skin becomes less resilient to external stressors, including UV radiation.

Sun damage is not selective

SPF is essential for every skin type and every skin tone, wherever your skin colour might sit on the Fitzpatrick scale. Darker skin may have more natural melanin, which offers some inherent protection, but it does not prevent DNA damage, collagen breakdown or long term pigmentation issues triggered by ultraviolet exposure. Lighter skin may burn more quickly, but deeper skin tones are often more prone to persistent hyperpigmentation and uneven tone when unprotected. The biology is consistent. Ultraviolet radiation drives cellular damage in all skin. The difference is how that damage presents. Daily SPF is therefore not about skin colour. It is about protecting function, preserving clarity, and maintaining the integrity of the skin at every level.

When you protect the skin consistently, you are not just preventing damage. You are preserving function. And that is where real skin longevity begins.
