Menopause and your skin

Your skin is not failing. It is changing.

You are not imagining it. One day your skin felt balanced, the next it is dry, tight and reactive, with breakouts you have not seen in years and products that once worked now falling flat. Whether you are peri, post or somewhere in between, here is what is actually happening, and what helps.

What does menopause do to your skin?

Oestrogen is one of the skin's great quiet workers. As it falls, three things change at once.

01

Oestrogen falls. Collagen follows.

Research suggests skin loses around 30 percent of its collagen in the first five years after menopause. Firmness softens, plumpness thins, and lines that used to recover overnight begin to settle in.

02

The barrier thins. Moisture escapes.

Oestrogen supports the barrier lipids and hyaluronic acid that hold water in your skin. With less of it, moisture escapes faster, so skin feels dry, tight and more reactive than it used to.

03

Renewal slows. Congestion returns.

Cell turnover slows, so dead cells sit longer on the surface. Skin looks duller, texture creeps in, and for many women congestion and breakouts reappear alongside the dryness.

Where do I start?

The Renewal Code is the two step answer for skin in hormonal flux: Power DNA plus Cream Drench, morning and night, nothing to work out. Clinical grade skincare, matched to what menopausal skin is actually losing. If the biggest change in your skin is reactivity, flushing or feeling constantly upset, the Calm Code (Serum Serene plus Cream Revive) may be the better fit.

Your questions, answered.

Why is my skin so dry during menopause?

Oestrogen helps your skin make the ceramides and hyaluronic acid that hold water in the barrier. As it falls, the barrier holds less moisture and loses it faster, which is why skin that was never dry at 35 can feel tight and parched at 50. Hydrating serums and richer barrier creams matter more now than they ever have.

Why am I getting breakouts during menopause?

As oestrogen falls, its balancing effect on your natural androgens weakens. That shift can increase oil in some areas while the rest of your face stays dry, and slower cell turnover lets congestion build. Breakouts alongside dryness are common in perimenopause. Support the barrier first rather than stripping the skin with harsh products designed for teenage skin, they make midlife breakouts worse, not better.

Can skincare actually help menopausal skin?

Skincare cannot replace hormones and does not treat menopause. What it can do is give skin back what it is losing: hydration, barrier support, a cue for renewal and daily UV protection. A consistent, well matched routine makes a visible difference to how menopausal skin looks and feels, and it is the difference between skin that is understood and skin that is guessed at.

Which SkinGoal products should I start with for menopausal skin?

Start with the Renewal Code: Power DNA plus Cream Drench, morning and night. It is the SkinCode pair matched to skin in hormonal flux, feeding the cells and cueing renewal in two steps with nothing to work out. If your skin has become very reactive, flushing, feeling hot or reacting to products it used to love, start with the Calm Code instead: Serum Serene plus Cream Revive, matched to skin that needs calming before it needs correcting. And if you would rather be diagnosed than guess, the two minute Skin Quiz gives you your Skin Note, stage by stage recommendations written the way Penny writes them in clinic, plus 15 percent off your first order.

Is this perimenopause or menopause, and does it matter for my skin?

For your skincare, less than you might think. Perimenopause is the transition, when hormones fluctuate, and menopause is confirmed twelve months after your last period. Skin changes usually begin in perimenopause and continue after it, and the support your skin needs, moisture, barrier care, renewal and daily protection, is the same across both. If your skin has changed, it is time, whatever stage you are at. If you are in the earlier stage, our perimenopause and your skin guide covers what to look for first.
