Powering up our DNA

Oh. My. Gosh. I have spent the last few months in such a state of excitement I thought I might pop. I have been awaiting the arrival of a new product to add to my collection of incredible serums: Power DNA.

So, why am I so excited? I’m excited because Power DNA harnesses the power (there’s that exciting word again!) of Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN), which is something quite extraordinary, if I say so myself. Let me explain…

Here’s the science bit, and why I am so excited about Power DNA.

The boffins (love that word) who develop and create my skincare products have been getting very excited about Vitamin B derivatives for their anti-ageing and skin cell longevity properties. We’re already familiar with niacinamide as I have incorporated this lovely ingredient into other SkinGoal products. But now they have devised a way to bring other amazing benefits of various Bs to bear on our skin health too, in a newly developed compound, Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN), which has caused quite a stir among skincare scientists around the world.

What is NMN?

NMN is a naturally occurring molecule found in small amounts in various foods like broccoli, avocados, and edamame - all of which I love, so that’s already exciting! It is a precursor to Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+), a critical coenzyme found in every cell of our body. NAD+ plays a vital role in energy metabolism, DNA repair, and cell survival, all of which are crucial for maintaining strong, healthy and youthful skin.

Here is a very exciting list of all the things NMN can do to boost our skin:

1. Enhanced cellular repair and DNA protection

DNA repair: NMN boosts NAD+ levels, which are essential for the function of enzymes involved in DNA repair. This helps to fix damage caused by environmental factors such as UV radiation and pollution.

Cell survival: By enhancing the cellular repair mechanisms, NMN promotes the survival and longevity of skin cells, delaying the onset of ageing.

2. Increased collagen production

Collagen Synthesis: NMN helps in maintaining NAD+ levels, which in turn support the

synthesis of collagen. As I have talked about many times, collagen is a critical protein that maintains skin elasticity and firmness, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

3. Improved hydration and skin barrier function

Moisture Retention: NMN enhances the skin’s ability to retain moisture by strengthening the skin barrier. This results in plumper, more hydrated skin.

Barrier Function: A stronger skin barrier protects against environmental aggressors, reducing the risk of dryness and irritation.

4. Antioxidant Defence

Free Radical Protection: NMN boosts the body’s antioxidant defences by increasing NAD+ levels, which helps to neutralise harmful free radicals. This reduces oxidative stress, a major contributor to premature ageing.

Healthy Glow: By combating oxidative damage, NMN helps to maintain a healthy, radiant complexion.

5. Enhanced energy production

Cellular Energy: NAD+ is crucial for the production of ATP, the energy currency of cells. By boosting NAD+ levels, NMN ensures that skin cells have sufficient energy to perform their functions effectively.

Vitality and Radiance: Energised skin cells are better able to regenerate and repair, resulting in a more vibrant and youthful appearance.

Now, while the NMN compound supports many NAD+ related activities, boosting NAD+ itself is of course something that will have a massive impact on the efficacy of this serum. Happily, we can do this too, by including Helianthus Annuus Sprout Extract.

Studies have shown that Helianthus Annuus Sprout Extract boosts NAD+ and so improves DNA repair mechanisms, which helps counteract those more visible signs of ageing, improves cellular metabolism, energises mitochondria (the little battery packs that produce energy for cells) and helps the skin look up to eight years younger.

When I was asked if I would like to introduce a serum containing these incredibly powerful ingredients, there was only one answer: where do I sign?

I hope everything I have said here helps you understand why I am excited about Power DNA, and helps you be excited too!

Love, Penny x
