I wish I could build a little drum roll into my posts, sometimes, as this product makes me so happy it really deserves one. Why - because it delivers everything you need in a night cream for mature skin - hydrating, smoothing, boosting collagen production and fighting the environmental aggressors that can lead to visible damage.

Why do we need a separate night cream?

I’m often asked by clients I see in my skin clinic why they should invest in a night cream. They ask why they can’t just use the same cream as they use in the morning. The answer is simple: a day cream is designed to protect you against the barrage of environmental aggressors your skin will face all day, from UV light to air conditioning to air pollution. A night cream takes advantage of the fact that it is at night when your skin kicks into rejuvenation mode and supports this by feeding skin with extra moisture and also targeting specific skin concerns such as fine lines and pigmentation.

So, why can’t I use my night cream in the day?

Because night creams often contain active ingredients such as retinoids or AHAs, they really shouldn’t be used in the day, as these active ingredients are photosensitive and in higher quantities than would be recommended for daily day-time use.

When developing my SkinGoal skincare collection, a really excellent night cream was top of the list of must-haves. Who doesn’t want to smooth on a luxurious, soothing cream and just go to sleep while it does its work? Our skin gets active at night, so a hydrating cream that essentially feeds skin what it needs to rejuvenate, allied with ingredients to smooth skin and address those pesky pigment spots so many of us get as we age, was a no brainer. 

What makes my Cream Revive night cream so special? I have chosen multiple powerful ingredients that do great things, but made sure that it’s safe for sensitive skin, too. It’s perfect for those in perimenopause or menopause, as it addresses the most common issues we meet - such as dryness, dullness and increased sensitivity.

Every ingredient does more than one great thing, but here are some of the key actions Cream Revive offers your skin.

Deeply hydrating

I have layered up the hydration factor in this cream, using multiple powerful ingredients to really get the moisture where it needs to be. 

Glycogen is used to promote deep hydration and triggers an increase in your skin barrier function. We use glycogen that is sustainably sourced from sweet corn, as glycogen is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that is triggered when the skin is exposed to stress, such as UV exposure, and works to improve the skin’s cellular energy levels, so it can recover from the day’s stresses. Cream Revive feeds glycogen into your skin, giving it an extra boost to do what it wants to do. This formulation contains ‘shape-shifting’ glycogen molecules that can alter their diameter and flatten to pass through the layers of the skin, allowing for deeper penetration into the dermis, resulting in a significant increase in skin hydration. 

Panthenol, or Vitamin B5, penetrates the skin and replenishes moisture. Panthenol is a humectant, which means it helps to attract and retain moisture in the skin. This can help to improve the skin’s hydration levels by decreasing trans epidermal water loss and reduces dryness and flakiness.

Finally, Saccharide isomerate locks in hydration, leaving your skin revitalised and replenished ready for a new day.

Promotes radiant skin

What is radiant skin? Well, we have all heard of dull skin - skin with a build up of dead cells, that feels a little dry to the touch and a bit tight - so radiant skin is your skin with all that taken away. I use a combination of ingredients that gently work together to exfoliate skin, smooth fine lines and address pigmentation.

Mastic gum is a natural, plant-based alternative to retinol. It works by inhibiting CYP26 enzymes which are responsible for the elimination of retinoic acid in the skin. By inhibiting the CYP26 enzymes, your own natural retinoic acid levels can increase, smoothing skin’s texture and reducing the signs of fine lines.

Glycogen is also a great ingredient for enhancing skin radiance, with studies showing it effectively addresses skin dullness and dark spots.

Bakuchiol is a plant-based ingredient that is a natural and gentler alternative to retinol. Perfect for people who experience skin irritation with retinol, it serves to smooth skin, exfoliate dead skin cells and so address dullness and pigmentation.

Encourages collagen production

Ageing is no fun, and one of the earliest impacts is the slow down in production of new collagen. Less collagen results in less bounce and spring in our skin, fine lines and wrinkles and a slower healing process. In Cream Revive, a combination of two peptides work synergistically to stimulate collagen production. The already mentioned glycogen is another great ingredient for collagen, as it boosts metabolic activity in the very cells that naturally produce collagen.

Antioxidants fight oxidative stress

What is oxidative stress? An overproduction of oxidants, which can be the result of UV exposure and other external environmental aggressors, can trigger inflammation, collagen fragmentation and reduced collagen production, and a disorganisation of skin cell functions, and at it worst contribute to skin issues, including cancer. We can help combat this with anti-oxidants (although lifestyle changes are also helpful) so it was important to me to include antioxidants in my night cream

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B5, is, among other positives, a great antioxidant and has been shown to repair UV-induced damage, in turn reducing the signs of photo-ageing - those dark spots and blemishes we all struggle with.

Chinese alder leaf extract is known to have several skin benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It also boosts elastin production. Elastin is found in the skin's dermal layer and is a stretchy protein that enables it to stretch and rebound.

So there you go, Cream Revive, a night cream that delivers on the four key concerns for those of us with mature skin: hydration, collagen production, dullness and oxidative stress.
